Calgary's Mayor Race Heating Up
2010.10.15 22:42:18

The mayor's race is reaching a fever pitch and after hearing several candidates outline their platforms, I have more questions than answers.

Barb Higgins has the public image, no political experience;

Ric McIver has the political experience and a serious demeanor - although politics is a serious matter!!!!

Nenshi has the grassroots voters - a million dollar smile but can he spar with the tigers in the chamber?

and what about the undecided?the youth?the elderly?the dormant voter that only this weekend decides to rise up as the would be 'swing vote'.  How much research will that voter actually do?

Chiming in is allowed here - so here goes: Politics is an acquired passion - some flourish while others flounder! Decisions and concensus building are not for the faint of heart...its exhausting, exhilerating, stressful, and often frustrating as too many voices create NOISE on issues of great importance.  To the undecided - quick notes: a 3 year term is a heartbeat of time and its unrealistic to clutter the agenda with more than one or two MEGA issues. MEGA issues are like eating an elephant - better to take small bites and digest rather than being a vampire and slaying the beast with one deep wound.  Also, politics is more like an ocean liner than a MOOMBA speed boat...so do not be fooled by all that glitters.  Change is slow and painful.  So is growth - and how Calgary has grown.  In 1994 when I arrived here, the population was a mere 650,000 people, now cresting 1.2M. That's almost double in 15 years.  With growth comes BIG CITY challenges including: simple things like snow removal. Both McIver and Higgins have a plan to handle this. Crime - its everywhere so public service issues are a NO BRAINER.

Then I heard about the ring road "romantic vision" and for just one moment I too was sweep away in the notoriety of the moment... thinking that an angel had been sent to us to cure all that is not well in the SW quadrant of the city and our beloved future ring road.

Reality soon set in to suggest that the only way truly to get action on this issue to "reopen: dialogue is through economic means/pain! It's a negotiation - for the Nation, that negotiation is ALL BUT OVER. For Calgarians - its a pain. But lets for one moment,  envision how easy it will be for gamblers and supply chain trucks to access the nations land from their remote "access" points  will affect the revenues of the Nations beloved casino - sure there is give and take, but similar to a marriage gone bad - when the love is gone, all that is left is the money. The ship of the ring road dreams with a 20 year history  - has sailed to everyones peril. NEXT is to get a mayor that will DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE to continue the city growth and move on to other MEGA ISSUES - enter Airport tunnel, taxes, homelessness, etc.

City Hall is definitely in need of some silo busting between administration and elected officials.  As our world moves to a more open environment with so much information at our fingertips, hard choices and defined vision are vitally important - choose and VOTE wisely on monday....but for sure...VOTE.
